The relationship between Sartre and anti-Semitism seems to be reduced, in recent years, to the discussion around the attitude adopted by the philosopher against the collaboration regime of Vichy^¹. This, however, is not where we intend to begin our investigation. We will, on the contrary, attempt to critically question ourselves starting from the theoretical analysis of the phenomenon of anti-Semitism that Sartre developed in the pages of an essay published in the mid-Forties: Réflexions sur la question juive.

Prima e oltre: before and beyond

Coming together in the beautiful and ancient setting of Macerata for the conference “Auschwitz: Prima e Oltre” we cannot know what it is to live before Auschwitz because all of us born into the post-war European world have grown up in its long shadows, even if for many years we could not recognise them for what they were^¹. We can read historians to tell us and for a few years we can still listen to the voices of survivors who lived through these terrible times in the hope that we can fully “take in” what they have to say to us.

This work arises from the hypothesis of proposing a reading of present societies which travels through the understanding of that which occurred during their evolution in a modern form. The use of "the East" as the other is a general practice in European identity formation.
"The East" is indeed Europe’s other, and it is continuously being recycled in order
to represent European identities. Since the “Eastern absence” is a defining trait of “European”
identities, there is no use talking about the end of an East/West divide in European history after
the end of the Cold War. The question is not whether the East will be used in the forging of new
European identities but how this is being done

This study is an open reflection on remembrance, memory, and the patterns of acknowledging the past or forgetting it within the contemporary European identity construction. However disputed might be the causal link between the history and the shape of identitarian narratives developed or emerging inside the European Union, it would defy commonsense to ignore the role of memory as a reservoir for resources in the identity making processes.

Political thought has always investigated the implications of technology, as instrumental dimension of production, of construction, with respect to the deliberative sphere of political acting. This concerns reflections, which in the different declinations assumed in modern thinking, have tried to hold the instrumental-procedural dimension together with the finalistic-projective one, there where the capacity of rational politics based on the subject seemed to be able to go beyond technology, functionally ordering and subordinating it^¹.
